NKT Completes First Installation Campaign to Connect Yggdrasil Offshore Oil and Gas Area in Norway

Danish power cable maker and services provider NKT has successfully completed the first installation campaign in Norway to connect the Aker BP-operated Yggdrasil offshore oil and gas area to shore.

NKT announced the completion of the first installation campaign in the Norwegian fjords and the North Sea. The company has now begun the installation of a 255 km HVAC cable that will link the Yggdrasil offshore oil and gas area to the mainland.

The cable-laying vessel, NKT Victoria, was utilized for the initial installation campaign, showcasing the company’s expertise in offshore cable installations.

Once operational, the 145 kV cables will deliver a stable, low-emission power supply to the Yggdrasil area, contributing to sustainable energy production.

NKT emphasized the importance of collaboration with Equinor throughout the cable design, production, and installation phases. The Yggdrasil development project on the Norwegian Continental Shelf is led by operator Aker BP, with Equinor and Orlean Upstream Norway as license partners.

The Yggdrasil area comprises the Hugin, Fulla, and Munin license groups and is strategically located between Alvheim and Oseberg in the North Sea.

Aker BP’s partners for the Yggdrasil development include Equinor and PGNIG Upstream Norway, with estimated gross resources exceeding 700 million barrels of oil equivalent.

The project entails the construction of three platforms, nine subsea templates, new pipelines for oil and gas export, and power supply from shore. The entire Yggdrasil area will be operated remotely from an integrated operations center and control room onshore in Stavanger, showcasing cutting-edge technology and innovation in the offshore oil and gas sector.
