NKT Commissions OSBIT to Build World’s Most Powerful Subsea Trencher

Danish power cable manufacturer and services provider NKT has partnered with U.K.-based original equipment supplier OSBIT to develop the NKT T3600, poised to become the most powerful subsea trencher globally.

With the increasing demand for high-voltage power cables required for renewable energy projects, NKT is making significant investments in manufacturing and installation capabilities. The company recently introduced the NKT Eleonora, a state-of-the-art cable lay vessel capable of deploying heavier and longer cables.

Now, NKT is focusing on advancing cable protection technology by constructing the world’s most potent subsea trencher, boasting an impressive 3,600 horsepower capacity to bury cables up to 5.5 meters below the seabed.

This strategic investment reinforces NKT’s comprehensive cable solutions for installing power cables at greater depths with minimal risks, ensuring reliable and secure operations.

OSBIT has been entrusted with the design and construction of the trencher, including the Launch & Recovery System (LARS). The trencher is scheduled to be operational by 2027 and will feature both jetting and cutting capabilities, enabling it to function effectively in various soil conditions.

Darren Fennell, Executive Vice President and Head of HV Solutions at NKT, emphasized the critical role of cable protection in today’s environment. He stated, “Protecting power cables is more crucial than ever due to the heightened risks of sabotage and increased maritime activities. Our trencher will set the benchmark for deep-burial cable protection, offering unparalleled performance in challenging soil conditions. Additionally, through this investment, we are supporting the local economy by engaging UK companies in the trencher’s design and development.”
