Finnish Cleantech Company Norsepower Installs Wind Propulsion System on Bulk Carrier

Finnish cleantech company Norsepower, in collaboration with shipping company IINO Lines and electric power company J-POWER, has successfully installed a revolutionary wind propulsion system on a bulk carrier.

The installation of a 24m x 4m Norsepower Rotor Sail on the bulk carrier Yodohime was completed in December 2024, marking a significant milestone in sustainable shipping practices. The vessel embarked on its maiden voyage with the wind propulsion system in January 2025, showcasing the potential of harnessing wind power in modern maritime operations.

Utilizing advanced AI technology, the rotor sail’s rotation, direction, and speed are automatically controlled based on real-time meteorological data. By leveraging the Magnus effect created when wind interacts with the rotating cylindrical sail, the system generates a substantial thrust, contributing to a projected 6-10% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Yodohime is the latest addition to IINO Lines’ fleet to be equipped with Norsepower Rotor Sails, following the successful installation on the very large gas carrier (VLGC) Oceanus Aurora in November. Operating between Houston, USA, and Stenungsund, Sweden, or Porvoo, Finland, the Oceanus Aurora has already demonstrated a 4% decrease in fuel consumption and emissions, aligning with global sustainability targets.

With the adoption of innovative wind propulsion solutions like the Norsepower Rotor Sail, the maritime industry is poised to achieve significant environmental benefits while optimizing operational efficiency. As the sector continues to prioritize sustainability, collaborations between technology providers, shipping companies, and energy suppliers play a crucial role in driving the transition towards greener shipping practices.
