Norway Continues to Lead in Maritime Decarbonization Efforts
Norway remains committed to supporting the advancement of new technologies that will drive maritime decarbonization while simultaneously creating new industries and job opportunities. The Enova program recently announced its fourth round of grants, allocating approximately $76 million for projects focused on hydrogen and ammonia as alternative fuels for ships, as well as the development of facilities for storing ammonia.
Enova SF, owned by Norway’s Ministry of Climate and Environment, prioritizes technology and market development, digitalization, community support, and business management. With a strong emphasis on the shipping industry, Enova aims to position Norway at the forefront of the maritime transition.
“Norway must lead the way in sea-based decarbonization,” stated Minister for Climate and Environment Andreas Bjelland Eriksen. “By supporting maritime projects, we empower them to spearhead global adoption of new solutions.”
Enova’s latest funding round selected four hydrogen-powered and two ammonia-powered ships to receive support. Approximately NOK 510 million ($50 million) was allocated to hydrogen projects, while NOK 253 million ($25 million) went to ammonia initiatives.
Hydrogen-Powered Projects
LH2 Shipping and Møre Maritime are among the recipients of Enova grants for developing hydrogen-powered vessels. LH2 Shipping, known for its involvement in Norled’s M/F Hydra pilot project, is now focusing on scaling up hydrogen operations for short sea shipping. With a $23.5 million grant from Enova, LH2 aims to advance its liquid-hydrogen ship concepts while emphasizing the importance of developing infrastructure to support hydrogen fueling along the coast.
Møre Maritime’s Initiatives
Møre Maritime, another grant recipient, is working on two hydrogen-powered short sea bulkers. Leveraging its experience and expertise, Møre Maritime aims to pioneer hydrogen propulsion in maritime operations, furthering Norway’s commitment to sustainable shipping practices.
Ammonia-Powered Projects
Amon Maritime, a key player in the ammonia sector, is advancing plans for two bulk carriers fueled by ammonia. With a focus on large vessels with high fuel consumption, Amon Maritime sees ammonia-fueled propulsion as a viable solution for reducing emissions and driving sustainability in maritime transport. The company is receiving $25 million from Enova to support its innovative initiatives.
Amon Maritime’s Vision
CTO Steinar Kostøl of Amon Maritime underscores the potential of ammonia-fueled propulsion for medium-sized gas carriers, emphasizing the cost-efficiency and environmental benefits of this technology. By designing vessels optimized for ammonia transport, Amon Maritime aims to catalyze the adoption of ammonia propulsion and stimulate investment in related infrastructure.
Enova’s Comprehensive Support
Enova’s commitment to advancing energy and climate technologies extends beyond hydrogen and ammonia initiatives. The organization provides support for battery electrification, biogas production, and the development of various energy carriers in maritime transport. By fostering innovation and sustainability in the maritime sector, Enova plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of shipping in Norway and beyond.
