Norwegian Shipping Company Møre Sjø Embraces Hydrogen-Powered Future

Norwegian shipping company Møre Sjø is taking a bold step towards a more sustainable future by investing in hydrogen as an alternative marine fuel. The company recently placed an order for the construction of two cutting-edge, emission-free hydrogen-powered bulk carriers at Gelibolu Shipyard in Türkiye. In addition, Møre Sjø has secured bunker supplies from hydrogen producer GreenH, ensuring a steady source of fuel for its innovative vessels.

Revolutionary Design and Operations

The newbuild vessels, each measuring 85 meters in length with a deadweight capacity of 4,000 tons, are set to revolutionize maritime transport in northern and northwestern Norway. These ships will primarily transport sand, stone, and asphalt, with one of them already leased to Nordasfalt. Designed by marine engineering company Naval Dynamics and equipped with onboard hydrogen solutions from German technology firm e-Cap Marine, these vessels are poised to become the world’s first hydrogen-powered bulk carriers.

Strategic Partnerships and Support

Møre Sjø’s ambitious hydrogen initiative has garnered support from key stakeholders in the industry. The company has received investment support from ENOVA and the NOx Fund, financial assistance from NRP, and technical guidance from the Green Shipping Program. This collaborative effort has paved the way for the development and construction of these groundbreaking ships.

A Vision for a Cleaner Future

Torstein Holsvik, Technical Director at Møre Sjø, expressed optimism about the project’s potential impact on the maritime sector. He highlighted the importance of transitioning to cleaner fuels and the strategic decision to opt for hydrogen-powered vessels over traditional marine gas oil. Holsvik emphasized the cost-effectiveness and environmental benefits of hydrogen as a fuel source, pointing to the expected alignment of hydrogen and marine gas oil prices by the time the ships are completed in early 2027.

GreenH, the chosen hydrogen supplier for Møre Sjø’s newbuild ships, will provide hydrogen from multiple production facilities across Norway. With planned facilities in key locations such as Hammerfest, Bodø, and Kristiansund, GreenH is poised to support the maritime industry’s shift towards sustainable fuel sources.

As Møre Sjø prepares to welcome its hydrogen-powered bulk carriers in 2027, the company stands at the forefront of maritime innovation and environmental stewardship. By embracing hydrogen as a clean fuel alternative, Møre Sjø is setting a new standard for sustainable shipping operations.
