Nova Scotia Launches Competitive Process for Tidal Stream Energy Projects

Nova Scotia has recently announced the launch of a competitive process aimed at attracting new tidal stream energy projects at the Fundy Ocean Research Center for Energy (FORCE), Canada’s leading research facility for tidal stream technology.

The process, managed by Power Advisory, is seeking projects with a capacity between 5 MW and 8 MW. Interested applicants can apply to utilize Berth B, Berth E, or both, with a total capacity not exceeding 13 MW across both sites. The draft call for applications is currently open for comments, with a final version expected to be released soon.

FORCE Executive Director Lindsay Bennett expressed optimism about the renewed interest in the tidal sector, stating, “With many companies already expressing interest, it’s encouraging to see renewed momentum in the tidal sector.”

FORCE provides essential infrastructure such as subsea cables, a shore-based substation, and overhead transmission lines to facilitate grid connection for project developers. This support allows developers to focus on deployment and operations of their projects.

“Companies from around the world continue to want to work in Nova Scotia,” Bennett added. “We’re geared up to support planning, deploying, and monitoring tidal energy devices in this powerful environment.”

The initiative to attract new tidal stream energy projects aligns with Canada’s goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Bennett emphasized the importance of working closely with various stakeholders to ensure the success of these projects and their positive impact on the marine environment.

This announcement follows Nova Scotia’s earlier preparations to initiate a procurement process for two tidal energy berths at FORCE in the Minas Passage. The province’s commitment to supporting innovative and sustainable energy solutions continues to drive progress in the renewable energy sector.
