The Growth of Offshore Wind Energy: A Global Perspective

Offshore wind energy has been a topic of debate among critics, but a recent market analysis by RenewableUK sheds light on the remarkable growth of this sector. The report highlights a 15 percent increase in installed capacity over the past year, showcasing the rapid expansion of offshore wind energy globally.

Key milestones include the global capacity surpassing 80.9 GW, with countries like China and the Netherlands leading the way in new installations. Additionally, emerging markets such as Indonesia, Chile, and Malta have confirmed their first offshore wind projects, signaling a shift towards renewable energy adoption.

Global Expansion and Market Trends

RenewableUK’s Chief Executive, Dan McGrail, acknowledges the industrial, economic, and environmental opportunities that offshore wind technology offers. The report emphasizes the concentrated growth in countries like China and the Netherlands, which accounted for a significant portion of new capacity in 2024.

While China has emerged as a dominant player in the offshore wind industry, countries like the UK, Germany, and the US are also making strides in expanding their offshore wind capabilities. The report predicts continued growth, with an increasing number of countries entering the offshore wind market.

Opportunities and Challenges

RenewableUK underscores the potential for the UK to maximize its investment in offshore wind capacity, especially as wind energy surpasses gas as the country’s largest electricity source. The upcoming Allocation round 7 presents opportunities for new offshore wind projects, with significant interest from stakeholders.

Technological advancements, such as Siemens Gamesa’s development of a prototype 21 MW offshore turbine, showcase the industry’s potential for growth. The report forecasts a possible capacity of 254 GW by 2030, with the emerging floating offshore wind segment expected to reach 3.9 GW installed by the same year.
