Fire Breaks Out on Oil Tanker and Cargo Ship in South Korea, One Dead
An oil tanker and a cargo ship caught fire in the southern coastal city of Yeosu, South Korea, on Saturday, resulting in one fatality and two injuries. The incident occurred when a fire broke out on the 2692-ton tanker and the 24-ton cargo ship, which were docked next to each other, according to the Yeosu Coast Guard.
Witnesses from nearby vessels promptly alerted the Coast Guard of the fire, leading to the swift rescue of all 18 crew members on board the two ships. Tragically, the captain of the cargo ship was found unconscious and later pronounced dead. Additionally, two crew members from the oil tanker sustained burn injuries during the incident.
Although the cause of the fire remains unknown, an investigation into the matter has been initiated to determine the circumstances that led to the blaze. Fortunately, the fire was successfully contained and extinguished by emergency responders by 7:45 a.m.
Of particular concern is the presence of 2500 tons of toxic chemicals on board the tanker. While there is no confirmation of any spillage into the surrounding waters, authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any potential environmental impact.
As the investigation progresses, the maritime community and local authorities are working together to ensure the safety of all vessels in the area and to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
