Singapore-based ONE Holds Naming Ceremony for Methanol-Ready Container Vessel

Singapore-based shipping company Ocean Network Express One (ONE) has recently celebrated a significant milestone in its corporate history with the naming ceremony of its first owned newbuild container vessel – the 13,800 TEU methanol-ready ONE Sparkle.

ONE Sparkle, built at Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, South Korea, boasts methanol- and ammonia-ready fuel capability, with the option for future conversion to these alternative fuels. The vessel features an optimized hull design for improved energy efficiency, energy-saving devices, smart technology for optimal performance, and shore power connection capabilities.

Classed by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), ONE Sparkle will fly the Singaporean flag and be managed by OneSea Solutions, a ship management company jointly owned by ONE and Seaspan Corporation.

Commitment to Sustainable Shipping

Jeremy Nixon, CEO of ONE, expressed his excitement about ONE Sparkle, stating: “This vessel is our first owned newbuilding and showcases our commitment to sustainable shipping with its innovative design and alternative fuel capabilities. As we expand our owned fleet, these advanced vessels will play a crucial role in meeting our environmental targets while enhancing our service reliability.”

Future Expansion Plans

ONE’s fleet expansion includes a series of 20 large ammonia/methanol-ready vessels to be built in Korea and Japan, with deliveries scheduled for 2025 and 2026. Additionally, the company has twelve 13,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel containerships on order in China, set for delivery from 2027.

Sustainability Initiatives

In line with its sustainability goals, ONE aims to achieve a 70% reduction in Scope 1 emissions per TEU-km from a 2008 baseline by 2030. The company is a signatory of the Call to Action for Shipping Decarbonisation, supporting efforts to fully decarbonize maritime shipping by 2050. ONE has developed a Green Strategy and Decarbonization Roadmap, focusing on carbon management, operational efficiency, green investment, alternative fuels, and ecosystem building.
