Imabari Shipbuilding Delivers Future-Proof Containership to Ocean Network Express

Imabari Shipbuilding, a key player in Japan’s vessel construction industry, recently celebrated the delivery of a cutting-edge 13,000 TEU containership to Ocean Network Express (ONE), a prominent shipping company based in Singapore.

The handover ceremony for the ONE Sapphire took place on June 12 at Imabari Shipbuilding’s Marugame yard in Kagawa, Japan. This state-of-the-art vessel boasts impressive dimensions, with a length of 335.94 meters, a width of 51 meters, and a depth of 30.1 meters.

The 140,233 gross tonnage newbuild was specifically designed for future conversion to operate on methanol and ammonia, showcasing Imabari Shipbuilding’s commitment to sustainable shipping practices. Additionally, the ship is equipped to accommodate carbon capture technology, further enhancing its environmental credentials.

ONE Sapphire prioritizes energy and fuel efficiency, incorporating various innovative solutions such as energy-saving devices, twisted rudders, a hybrid exhaust gas cleaning system, and an exhaust gas recirculation system. The vessel also features a ballast water treatment system and adheres to the Hong Kong International Convention for ship recycling standards.

Imabari Shipbuilding estimates that ONE Sapphire will achieve a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, with projections indicating a 60% decrease compared to conventional vessels.

Advancing Sustainability in the Maritime Industry

This delivery aligns with Ocean Network Express’s commitment to sustainability, as evidenced by their recent introduction of the ONE Sparkle, a 13,800 TEU ammonia/methanol-ready vessel constructed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. The company’s order for 20 environmentally conscious vessels signifies a proactive approach towards reducing carbon footprint.

Imabari Shipbuilding’s busy 2025 schedule includes the successful delivery of multiple vessels, ranging from bulk carriers to LNG-powered car carriers. With a focus on green technologies and eco-friendly practices, Imabari continues to contribute to a more sustainable maritime sector.

Japan’s Shipbuilding Industry Outlook

Japan’s shipbuilding industry is poised to deliver 16.3 million deadweight tons (dwt) of new tonnage this year, potentially surpassing South Korea as the world’s second-largest shipbuilding nation. This growth underscores Japan’s ongoing commitment to technological innovation and environmental stewardship in the maritime sector.

Overall, the delivery of the ONE Sapphire exemplifies the collaborative efforts of Imabari Shipbuilding and Ocean Network Express in driving sustainable practices and advancing the future of container shipping.
