Ocean Thermal Energy Corporation Partners with Johnson Controls for OTEC System Demonstration

Ocean Thermal Energy Corporation (OTE Corp) has announced a partnership with Johnson Controls to showcase the potential of deploying a 17.5 MW Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) system at a remote military base. This collaboration aims to advance energy independence for the U.S. Army Garrison – Kwajalein Atoll (USAG-KA) through Johnson Controls’ Deep Energy Retrofit Assessment program.

As part of the agreement, DCO Energy will act as the owner’s Engineer for OTE Corp, working closely to develop a comprehensive OTEC system design. This design will include project load analysis, conceptual engineering, and cost estimation to ensure the feasibility and effectiveness of the OTEC system at the military base.

OTE Corp’s OTEC technology is specifically designed to utilize natural ocean temperature differences to generate clean, continuous power and desalinated water. This innovative approach aligns with the Army’s commitment to energy security, sustainability, and resilience, particularly for installations like Kwajalein Atoll in the Republic of the Marshall Islands.

The partnership between OTE Corp and Johnson Controls builds on their combined expertise, demonstrated in previous projects such as a seawater cooling system design for a major resort in the Bahamas and a 7.5 MW OTEC conceptual design for Bahamas Power and Light. This collaboration highlights the transformative potential of OTEC technology in enhancing operational resilience for military bases and integrating renewable energy into national defense strategies.

Jeremy P. Feakins, Chairman and CEO of OTE Corp, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating, “Partnering with Johnson Controls underscores the transformative potential of OTEC technology. This initiative not only enhances operational resilience for military bases but also represents a significant step forward in integrating renewable energy into national defense strategies.”

In addition to energy production, the partnership will also explore the potential for seawater desalination to enhance water resilience at the USAG-KA site. This holistic approach to energy and water sustainability showcases the commitment of OTE Corp and Johnson Controls to driving innovation and resilience in military installations.
