Skarv Shipping Solutions Orders Ammonia-Powered Cargo Vessel

Norwegian joint venture Skarv Shipping Solutions, a collaboration between Peak CSL Group and Grieg Edge, has recently placed an order for an innovative ammonia-powered general cargo shortsea vessel in China.

The 7,800 dwt self-unloader is set to be delivered in the second quarter of 2027, marking a significant step towards sustainable shipping practices in the maritime industry.

Partnership with Arriva Shipping

Arriva Shipping, a compatriot owner and operator, has secured a charter agreement to manage the commercial operation of the vessel for wood products trader Viken AT Market. This partnership highlights the commitment to eco-friendly transport solutions and sets a new standard for the industry.

Viken AT Market, a key player in the shipping of Norwegian timber to the continent, will benefit from the vessel’s nearly zero emissions technology, showcasing a forward-thinking approach to environmental sustainability.

Technological Advancements

The vessel’s concept was developed by Bergen-based Skarv, with support from Grieg Shipbrokers, to bring the innovative technology to life. The ship is designed to operate efficiently at low speeds, utilizing an ammonia tank and marine gasoil for fuel, ensuring cost-effective and environmentally friendly operations.

With an electric propulsion system and access to shore power, the vessel represents a significant step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions in maritime transport.

Future Prospects

This newbuild marks a milestone in the industry’s shift towards sustainable shipping practices. Skarv Shipping’s commitment to ammonia-powered vessels sets a new standard for eco-friendly maritime transport, paving the way for a greener future.

With the successful partnership between Skarv Shipping, Arriva Shipping, and Viken AT Market, the industry is poised to embrace innovative solutions that prioritize environmental sustainability and operational efficiency.
