Petrobras Receives Approval to Clear Corals for Drilling Vessel in Foz do Amazonas Region

Recently, Petrobras, the state-run firm, was granted approval from Brazil’s environmental agency to clear corals from the underside of the drilling vessel it intends to use in the Foz do Amazonas region. This approval comes after a request made on February 10, signaling progress in Petrobras’ plans to explore the environmentally sensitive area off the coast of the northern Amapa state.

The clearance of corals is crucial due to the potential of the species being invasive if moved to another biome. The process of clearing the corals will be supervised by Ibama, Brazil’s environmental agency. Once the corals are cleared in Rio de Janeiro, the vessel will be able to sail to the Equatorial Margin, which is considered the most promising frontier for oil exploration by Petrobras.

If Petrobras secures the necessary license, the company aims to commence drilling in the area later this year. However, the journey towards obtaining the license has not been without challenges. Last month, Ibama’s technical staff recommended denying the drilling license for a well in the northern end of the Equatorial Margin, a region that shares geology with nearby Guyana, where Exxon Mobil is developing significant oil fields.

Despite these setbacks, Sylvia dos Anjos, Petrobras’ exploration and production head, expressed optimism during the CERAWeek conference in Houston, stating that the company is hopeful about receiving the license. The stakes are high as Petrobras seeks to tap into the vast potential of the Equatorial Margin for oil exploration.

In May 2023, Ibama initially denied Petrobras’ request for an offshore drilling license in the Foz do Amazonas area, citing environmental concerns. Following the denial, the oil company promptly appealed the decision, and a final ruling from Ibama is pending.

As Petrobras navigates the complexities of obtaining the necessary approvals and licenses, the company remains committed to its exploration efforts in the Foz do Amazonas region. The successful clearance of corals marks a significant step forward in Petrobras’ journey towards unlocking the region’s oil exploration potential.
