Introducing SolarDeck: Wattlab’s Innovative Solar Solution for Seagoing Shipping

Wattlab, the Netherlands-based maritime solar specialist, has recently unveiled its groundbreaking SolarDeck technology to revolutionize the seagoing shipping industry. This innovative system consists of modular and scalable deck-mounted solar panels designed to significantly reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions for vessels at sea.

After successfully implementing their SolarFlatrack system in the inland shipping sector, Wattlab is now expanding its reach to ocean-going vessels with the introduction of SolarDeck. This new technology offers shipowners a cost-effective solution to comply with Fuel EU Maritime and EU ETS regulations while achieving a quick return on investment within three to five years.

CEO Bo Salet emphasizes the importance of meeting shipowners’ needs with SolarDeck’s design. The system can be easily installed using container twist lock fittings, without interfering with loading and unloading operations. Additionally, the SolarDeck can be stored inside a 20-foot container when not in use, maximizing deck space for cargo storage.

Wattlab conducted extensive testing of SolarDeck on Vertom’s general purpose dry cargo vessel Anette, supported by the European Union’s Just Transition Fund. The results demonstrated the system’s resilience to harsh maritime conditions, ensuring consistent power output without the risk of salt crust formation. This durability allows SolarDeck to withstand storms and everyday activities onboard a seagoing cargo ship.

Based on the successful trial on the 7,280 dwt Anette, Wattlab projects significant fuel savings and CO2 emission reductions for similar coaster-type vessels. With an estimated annual reduction of 20 tons of fuel and 68 tons of CO2 emissions, shipowners can improve their EEXI and CII scores while capitalizing on potential savings through regulatory compliance.
