SC Ports Welcomes Largest Containership to Port of Charleston
SC Ports and the Port of Charleston, South Carolina achieved a significant milestone on February 18th with the arrival of the largest capacity containership to date, the OOCL Iris (16,868 TEU). This new vessel surpassed the previous record set four years ago, showcasing the state’s investments in port infrastructure and advancements in container shipping.
The OOCL Iris is part of a new class of NeoPanamax containerships being introduced by Orient Overseas Container Liner (OOCL). Built by Nantong COSCO KHI Ship Engineering Co., this cutting-edge vessel sets new standards in environmental design, energy efficiency, and digital intelligence. With features like an advanced energy efficiency system and multiple notations from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), the OOCL Iris represents the next generation of container ships.
With a length of 1,204 feet and a capacity of 16,868 TEU, the OOCL Iris surpasses the previous record holder, the CMA CGM Marco Polo. Despite its smaller dimensions, the new vessel can carry five percent more containers, thanks to advancements in loading and stacking techniques.
During its visit to Charleston, the OOCL Iris made a striking sight as it passed under the Arthur Ravenel Jr. bridge before docking at the Wando Welch Terminal. The port’s strategic investments in infrastructure, including a 54-foot berth depth and widened turning basins, ensure that ships of this size can access the port at any time.
Barbara Melvin, President and CEO of SC Ports, emphasized the importance of these investments in accommodating large vessels and supporting customers’ supply chains. SC Ports has committed nearly $3 billion to modernizing port facilities, expanding cargo capacity, and improving rail infrastructure.
The OOCL Iris and its sister ships will operate on a route from China and Far East ports to New York, Savannah, and Charleston, taking advantage of the NeoPanamax size restrictions. This marks a significant step forward in transoceanic shipping and highlights the Port of Charleston’s growing importance on the global stage.
