ITS Breaks Ground on Major Terminal Expansion Project at Port of Long Beach

International Transportation Service (ITS) has recently commenced a groundbreaking terminal expansion project at the Port of Long Beach, aimed at significantly enhancing capacity and operational efficiency.

The ambitious $365 million initiative will involve the creation of 19 acres of new land by filling an unneeded slip within the Pier G terminal. Furthermore, a single, continuous wharf spanning 3,400 feet will be constructed, enabling the simultaneous handling of two of the largest cargo ships in the industry.

“This investment by ITS will yield long-term benefits by facilitating smoother cargo movement, reducing delays, and generating more opportunities for waterfront labor – union jobs with stable incomes,” stated Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson.

Port of Long Beach CEO Mario Cordero commended ITS for its environmental stewardship, noting that the company was the first to sign a green lease almost two decades ago.

Situated in the outer harbor, the ITS terminal currently faces a geographical split due to the south slip. This gap will be filled with approximately 2.5 million cubic yards of reused sediment sourced from the Harbor District and dredged materials from Newport Harbor. The completion of the project is anticipated by late 2028.

“This undertaking fortifies America’s supply chain by investing in infrastructure using local labor and materials made in the U.S. We are not just preparing for the future; we are actively building it right here at home,” emphasized ITS Long Beach CEO Kim Holtermand.

The expansion project aligns seamlessly with the Port’s Green Port Policy, established in 2005, which prioritizes environmental enhancement and sustainability through various programs and initiatives.
