The Port of Savannah Sets New Container Volume Records

In April 2025, the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) announced a significant milestone at the Port of Savannah, recording a record-breaking container volume of 515,500 TEUs. This achievement represents a remarkable 17 percent increase compared to the previous year, highlighting the port’s continued growth and efficiency.

Notably, the port’s success extended beyond container traffic, with Mason Mega Rail handling over 50,000 rail lifts, marking an 8 percent year-over-year increase. Additionally, the Appalachian Regional Port set a new record with 4,241 lifts, demonstrating the port’s diverse capabilities and strong operational performance.

GPA President and CEO Griff Lynch expressed pride in the port’s accomplishments, stating, “Manufacturers, retailers, and agribusinesses continue to choose Georgia’s ports to serve customers across the Southeast and the world.” Lynch also emphasized the stability of operations, even in the face of challenges such as customers front-loading supply chains.

This latest milestone marks Savannah’s third consecutive monthly container record, following impressive volumes of 480,000 TEUs in February and 534,000 TEUs in March. The fiscal year to date has seen a total movement of 4.8 million TEUs, reflecting an 11 percent increase over the previous fiscal year.

Infrastructure Developments and Expansion Projects

Looking ahead, the GPA is investing in key infrastructure developments to further enhance the port’s capabilities. A new U.S. Customs inspection warehouse is set to open in July 2025 at Garden City Terminal, with a $44.5 million investment to double inspection space to 300,000 square feet and introduce refrigerated container capabilities.

Additionally, the GPA board approved the construction of a fourth berth at Brunswick’s Colonels Island Terminal, a $99.8 million project slated for completion in 2027. This expansion comes on the heels of Brunswick’s recognition as the nation’s busiest Roll-on/Roll-off terminal in 2024, handling over 900,000 RoRo units.

Leadership Changes and Future Outlook

As part of the ongoing evolution at the GPA, leadership changes were announced, with Alec Poitevint elected as the new Chairman, effective July 1, 2025. Poitevint’s appointment signals a commitment to driving continued growth and innovation at Georgia’s ports.
