Port of Thessaloniki Pioneers Maritime Decarbonization with Integration of RightShip’s MEP
In a significant milestone for maritime decarbonization, the Port of Thessaloniki (ThPA S.A.) has made history by becoming the first port in the EU and the Mediterranean to incorporate RightShip’s Maritime Emissions Portal (MEP) under the HELMEPA-led METAVASEA project, with support from the Lloyd’s Register Foundation.
Through a one-year pilot program, Thessaloniki has set a new regional standard for sustainability, offering crucial insights into value chain (Scope 3) emissions and enabling targeted, data-driven actions. This groundbreaking initiative represents a significant leap forward in emissions monitoring, empowering ports and shipping stakeholders to monitor and reduce their environmental impact.
Executive Chairman of the BoD of ThPA S.A., Athanasios Liagkos, highlighted the port’s commitment to sustainability, stating, “At ThPA S.A., sustainability is at the core of our strategy. Piloting the MEP reinforces our role in setting new standards in the port industry. By tracking and measuring value chain emissions from incoming vessels, we gain vital insights into the environmental impact of this activity, enabling targeted actions that support ‘greener’ practices in the maritime industry.”
Olga Stavropoulou, Director General of HELMEPA, emphasized the importance of the METAVASEA project in advancing decarbonization efforts in the Eastern Mediterranean, stating, “HELMEPA leads METAVASEA, a collective initiative of maritime stakeholders to advance decarbonization in the Eastern Mediterranean. The initiative strengthens industry participation, assesses preparedness for new fuels, and identifies key challenges towards improving operational efficiency in ports and shipping.”
Andrew Roberts, Executive Director for EMEA and Americas at RightShip, expressed his delight at the adoption of the MEP in the pilot program, highlighting the transformative power of technology in driving a cleaner, greener maritime future. He stressed the importance of partnerships like these in driving sustainability efforts in the maritime industry.
Dr. Tim Slingsby, Director of Skills and Education at Lloyd’s Register Foundation, underscored the need for accountability and robust measurement frameworks to track performance against sustainability goals. He praised the Port of Thessaloniki for its significant milestone and encouraged other ports in the region to join the initiative to deliver safer and more sustainable outcomes.
The METAVASEA Project and MEP
The METAVASEA project, coordinated by HELMEPA in collaboration with various partners, aims to drive a people-centered transition for maritime decarbonization in the East Mediterranean. The project focuses on enhancing industry participation, mapping existing infrastructure, and empowering maritime professionals through training and skills development.
The Maritime Emissions Portal (MEP), developed by RightShip, is a vital tool for monitoring, measuring, and managing maritime emissions accurately and efficiently. ThPA S.A.’s adoption of the MEP reinforces its commitment to sustainability and aligns with global decarbonization goals.
As a leading intermodal network and logistics solutions provider in the region, ThPA S.A. is well-positioned to drive positive change and support greener practices in the maritime industry. The pilot program underscores the port’s dedication to environmental stewardship and community engagement.
