Port of Tyne Acquires UK’s First Fully Electric Foiling Pilot Vessel

The UK’s Port of Tyne has made a significant investment in sustainability by purchasing the country’s first fully electric foiling pilot vessel. This move aligns with the Government’s Maritime 2050 strategy and showcases the port’s dedication to innovation and a cleaner future for the maritime sector.

The vessel, named Artemis EF-12 Pilot, incorporates eFoiler technology designed and constructed by Artemis Technologies in Belfast. This cutting-edge technology produces zero operational emissions, offering a cleaner alternative to traditional diesel-powered vessels. The integration of advanced hydrofoil and electric propulsion technologies ensures a smooth, quiet, and safe journey.

According to Port of Tyne, this investment represents a significant step towards achieving a net-zero pilotage service. The vessel is expected to be delivered before the end of the year and will be utilized for transferring pilots onto ships delivering essential goods and cargoes to the region.

Leadership Perspectives

CEO of Port of Tyne, Matt Beeton, expressed his excitement about the acquisition, stating, “Adding the EF-12 Pilot to the Port’s fleet is a significant milestone for both the Port of Tyne and the maritime sector. By adopting this groundbreaking technology, we are enhancing safety, efficiency, and sustainability in line with the Government’s Maritime 2050 strategy, shaping a cleaner, smarter future for ports across the UK.”

Iain Percy OBE, CEO of Artemis Technologies, highlighted the partnership with Port of Tyne as a testament to the potential of maritime innovation and technology in creating a cleaner maritime future. He emphasized their commitment to developing high-performance, zero-emission solutions and praised the collaboration with industry leaders who share a vision for transformation.

Artemis Technologies is also working on a similar project for the Swedish Maritime Administration, with the Artemis EF-12 pilot boat set to enter service in Nordic waters in spring 2026. This initiative further demonstrates the growing demand for sustainable maritime solutions.

Previously, Danish Vejrø Resort and Belgium-based provider of pilot and port services Brabo have also ordered 100% electric foiling pilot boats from Artemis Technologies, indicating a broader industry shift towards cleaner technologies.
