Russian Attacks Target Ukrainian Ports of Odesa and Chernomorsk
During the recent wave of Russian attacks in Ukraine, the ports of Odesa and Chernomorsk were among the targets hit. These attacks, described as some of the largest since the beginning of the war, have caused significant damage and casualties.
The Russian Ministry of Defense justified the strikes, claiming they targeted military installations and containers carrying drones and other supplies. However, Ukrainian officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba, denounced the attacks as targeting civilian infrastructure.
According to Kuleba, the attack on Odesa resulted in the death of at least one port worker and injuries to several others. The strikes, which included ballistic missile attacks, caused damage to buildings, vehicles, and equipment in the port area. Pictures from the scene showed containers engulfed in flames and smoke rising from the site.
Russia confirmed using Iskander missiles in the attack, targeting a containership carrying military cargo. They claimed the containers held parts for drones and artillery ammunition, with some still on the ship and others on the dock. The Ministry of Defense also reported targeting a container warehouse in Odesa.
Reports indicated that the attacks took place during the day, possibly to prevent the rapid relocation of the targeted equipment. In addition to Odesa, Russian forces also targeted military facilities in Chernomorsk as part of a larger assault across Ukraine.
These attacks on the ports are seen as part of Russia’s broader strategy to disrupt Ukraine’s export activities, particularly in the grain sector. Despite the damage caused, Ukraine has managed to maintain its export levels, including grain, metal products, and raw materials. Container services have also resumed, with major carriers using feeder ships to facilitate cargo movements.
As the conflict escalates, calls for peace talks and ceasefires have been overshadowed by renewed offensives and retaliatory actions. The situation remains volatile, with both sides continuing to suffer losses and destruction.
