French Windcoop Orders World’s First Wind-Powered Container Vessel
French activist shipping company Windcoop has made headlines with its recent order for what is being dubbed as the ‘world’s first’ wind-powered container vessel at RMK Marine shipyard in Tuzla, Türkiye.
The innovative vessel, set to operate on a route between Madagascar and France, is scheduled for construction in 2026 with a planned launch date of May 2027.
The wind-powered open hatch boxship will measure an impressive 91.3 meters in length and will feature several eco-friendly solutions. Notably, the vessel will be powered by three asymmetrical 350 square meter wingsails designed by Computed Wing Sail (CWS), resulting in a projected 60% reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions compared to traditional cargo ships.
The total cost of the project is estimated at around €28.5 million (approximately $31.3 million), with a significant portion already secured through equity and structured loans from domestic banks. Windcoop has plans to expand its fleet with a second unit currently in the design phase.
France’s Commitment to Sustainable Shipping
France has been at the forefront of adopting green technologies in the maritime industry, with companies like TransOceanic Wind Transport (TOWT) actively investing in wind-assisted ships. TOWT recently launched its first sailing cargo vessel, Anemos, and is underway with the construction of the third unit, Atlantis.
RMK Marine, known for its innovative projects, achieved a significant milestone with the completion of Neoliner Origin, the world’s first commercial sailing roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessel for French shipping company Neoline. This 136-meter-long vessel, which commenced construction in November 2023, is expected to start operations by summer 2025.
Looking Towards a Sustainable Future
With the introduction of the world’s first wind-powered container vessel and other eco-friendly initiatives in the maritime sector, France continues to pave the way for sustainable shipping practices. The shift towards green technologies not only reduces carbon emissions but also sets a new standard for environmentally conscious transportation in the industry.
