The Royal Canadian Navy’s HMCS Margaret Brooke Embarks on Historic Mission
On January 10, the Royal Canadian Navy’s HMCS Margaret Brooke set sail from Halifax, Canada, on a groundbreaking mission. This journey marks the first circumnavigation of South America and the first visit to Antarctica by a Royal Canadian Navy vessel.
Known as Operation PROJECTION – South America, this mission aims to strengthen international relationships by visiting ports across South America in collaboration with Global Affairs Canada. The HMCS Margaret Brooke, a Harry DeWolf-class Arctic Offshore Patrol Vessel (AOPV), will showcase its unique capabilities during this voyage.
One of the highlights of the mission is the ship’s visit to Antarctica, where it will support Canadian scientific research. A team of government scientists will be on board to conduct research in the Antarctic maritime environment.
The Royal Canadian Navy emphasizes the importance of this mission in showcasing the Harry DeWolf-class vessel’s expertise in both Arctic and Antarctic operations. This demonstrates the vessel’s versatility and capability to operate in diverse maritime environments.
Prior to this historic mission, the HMCS Margaret Brooke completed Operation NANOOK in October 2024. During this eight-week journey covering 7,650 kilometers, the ship participated in joint exercises with Arctic nations and allies. Additionally, the crew conducted Tide Surveys in the Arctic to contribute to Canadian Hydrographic Research.
While visiting Hopedale in Nunatsiavut, the ancestral land of the Labrador Inuit, the crew engaged in events for National Truth and Reconciliation Day, showcasing the Navy’s commitment to reconciliation and partnership with Indigenous communities.
