Deadly Attack on Port of Odesa: Ukrainian Authorities Report Casualties
In a tragic turn of events, Ukrainian authorities have reported a deadly attack on the port of Odesa. The incident, which has shocked the maritime community, involved a Russian missile strike on a Greek-managed bulker, resulting in the death of four sailors and injuries to several others.
According to official reports, the attack occurred during the evening, with sirens blaring to warn residents of an impending missile strike. The port of Odesa, a vital hub for maritime trade in the region, suffered significant damage as a result of the attack.
Details of the Attack
Serhiy Bratchuk, a member of the Public Council at the Odessa OVA, shared harrowing details of the attack on social media. The Odesa Port Authority also confirmed the incident, posting a photo of the fire-damaged bulker, named MJ Pinar.
The vessel, registered in Barbados, was loading 30,000 tons of wheat at the time of the attack. Tragically, three Syrian and one Ukrainian crewmember lost their lives, while several others sustained injuries. The port employee onboard the vessel was also reported to be injured.
Efforts to reach the vessel’s management in Greece have been unsuccessful, as the ship’s AIS signal is currently offline. Many ships navigating the Black Sea have opted to go dark amid escalating tensions in the region.
International Response
The attack on Odesa comes at a critical juncture in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The international community, including the World Food Program, has been closely monitoring the situation, particularly given the port’s role in food exports to African nations.
Notably, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent correspondence with former U.S. President Donald Trump has led to a resumption of military intelligence sharing and support for Ukraine. Talks in Saudi Arabia have hinted at a potential ceasefire, offering a glimmer of hope in the protracted war.
Collateral Damage
Vessels in the port of Odesa have faced the brunt of the conflict, with incidents of damage and casualties becoming all too common. The recent attack underscores the risks faced by seafarers and port workers in the region.
As the maritime community mourns the loss of life in Odesa, efforts are underway to assess the extent of the damage and provide support to those affected by the attack.
