Germany’s RWE and UK’s North Star Partner for Next-Gen Service Operation Vessels for Offshore Wind Fleet

Germany’s largest utility, RWE, and the UK’s largest shipowner-operator, North Star, have entered into long-term agreements for next-generation service operation vessels (SOVs) to maintain RWE’s expanding offshore wind fleet. The partnership aims to enhance efficiency and reduce emissions in the operation of offshore wind farms.

Agreements and Charter Details

RWE will charter two SOVs, namely the Grampian Eagle and the Grampian Kestrel, from North Star. These vessels are equipped to use alternative low-emission fuels, aligning with RWE’s commitment to sustainable practices. North Star will provide full marine services as part of the charters.

Additionally, RWE and North Star have reserved agreements for two newbuild vessels from the Norwegian Vard Group. These vessels are expected to support RWE’s offshore wind farm maintenance activities starting in 2028 and 2029.

Efficient Operations and Sustainability

The specialized SOVs offer accommodation for service technicians and can remain at wind farms for extended periods. Integrated walk-to-work gangway systems facilitate easier access to wind turbines, even in challenging weather conditions, enhancing safety standards.

The Grampian Eagle, chartered for a minimum of 12 years, will be deployed to support operations at the Triton Knoll offshore wind farm in the UK. The Grampian Kestrel, chartered for at least 10 years, will assist in maintaining RWE’s German offshore wind farms near Heligoland. Both vessels, built in the current year, are capable of using alternative fuels to minimize CO2 emissions.

Contract Details and Future Plans

The charter contract for Germany commences this winter, while the UK charter will start in summer 2026. RWE has the option to extend both contracts for an additional three years. Until the North Star vessels are ready, Windward Offshore will provide two vessels until the end of 2026.

Gitte Gard Talmo, CEO of North Star, highlighted the strategic partnership between the two companies, emphasizing their commitment to delivering world-class operational performance in SOV services.

This collaboration between RWE and North Star signifies a significant step towards sustainable offshore wind operations, showcasing the industry’s dedication to environmental stewardship and operational excellence.
