Saipem Collaborates with Divento for Floating Wind Projects in Italy

Italian offshore engineering and construction leader, Saipem, has partnered with Divento, a joint venture between Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners and GreenIT, to implement its innovative Star 1 floating wind technology in two offshore projects in Italy.

Saipem was chosen following a rigorous technical and economic feasibility assessment. The Star 1 technology is specifically designed for the construction of semi-submersible floating wind foundations, making it a perfect fit for the upcoming projects.

Projects Overview

The first project, 7 Seas Med, will be situated in the Strait of Sicily, approximately 35 km from the coast. With a capacity of 252MW and an annual production of around 800GWh, it is set to become a significant contributor to Italy’s renewable energy landscape. Notably, it has received the environmental compatibility decree from the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, marking a milestone in the country’s renewable energy sector.

The second project, Ichnusa Wind Power, is slated to be developed off the southwest coast of Sardinia, about 40 km from the shore. With a capacity of 504MW and an annual production of approximately 1.6TWh, it promises to be a substantial source of clean, renewable energy for the region.

Future Prospects

Both projects are currently in the development phase and are awaiting further clarity on the regulatory framework for the upcoming auctions for innovative renewables technologies in Italy, particularly floating offshore wind.

Kunal Patel, a partner at CIP, highlighted the importance of floating offshore wind in the Italian energy industry, emphasizing the need for a clear Contract for Difference (CfD) system to support the growth of this promising sector.

With Saipem’s expertise and Divento’s support, these projects are poised to usher in a new era of sustainable energy production in Italy, showcasing the country’s commitment to clean energy and technological innovation.
