The Liberian Registry and the Korean Register have recently granted Approval in Principle to Samsung Heavy Industries for the innovative design of a wing sail-equipped LNG carrier. This eco-friendly auxiliary propulsion system utilizes a wing structure to generate thrust through lift, reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainability in the maritime industry.
One of the key features of this design is the forward bridge placement, which addresses navigation visibility challenges commonly associated with wind-assisted propulsion systems. By integrating the wing sail with Samsung’s proprietary “SAVER Wind” air resistance reduction device, wind resistance is further minimized, enhancing the vessel’s efficiency and environmental impact.
With the global wind propulsion technology market projected to reach $2.5 billion by the 2050s, Samsung Heavy Industries plans to expand the application of this technology to other eco-friendly vessels, including ammonia and carbon dioxide carriers. This commitment to innovation aligns with the industry’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
