Kongsberg Maritime to Supply Azimuth Thrusters to Sanmar Shipyards for Tugboat Projects

Norway-headquartered marine technology provider Kongsberg Maritime is set to supply seventeen sets of its US-range azimuth thrusters to Türkiye’s Sanmar Shipyards for a series of international tugboat projects.

The azimuth thrusters to be supplied will vary in power outputs, ranging from 1765 kW to 2525 kW, with bollard pulls between 60 and 85 tons, as announced by Kongsberg Maritime.

Emre Kopuz, Senior Sales Manager at Kongsberg Maritime, stated that the contract with Sanmar Shipyards includes 34 US range azimuth thruster solutions for 17 tugboat newbuildings, aiming to enhance operational efficiency for the vessels.

The US-range solution was specifically designed to meet the requirements of modern vessel designs such as tugs that demand a more compact unit due to limited space in the thruster room.

This collaboration between Sanmar Shipyards and Kongsberg Maritime is not their first, as they have previously worked on several projects together, including the delivery of future-proof thruster units for new Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) tugboats.

Sanmar Shipyards, known for its focus on environmentally friendly tugboats, has delivered over 300 units to shipowners worldwide. One of their recent projects includes the construction of Latin America’s first electric tugboat.

In parallel, Kongsberg Maritime has been actively involved in various projects, such as converting a double-ended car ferry to emission-free battery-powered operation and introducing wind-assisted propulsion systems through their K-Sail service.
