SCHOTTEL Awarded Contract for Eco-Friendly Propulsion System for Portuguese Navy Support Ship
[By: SCHOTTEL]
SCHOTTEL has secured a significant contract to supply propulsion systems for a Multi-Purpose Support Ship (MPSS) for the Portuguese Navy. The vessel, named “NRP Dom João II”, is designed by Damen Shipyards Group to meet the specific requirements of the Portuguese Navy, focusing on defense, security, oceanic research, search and rescue, and emergency relief operations.
SCHOTTEL Propulsion Package
As part of the propulsion package, SCHOTTEL will provide two EcoPeller SRE 560 azimuth thrusters and one TransverseThruster STT 3 FP for the MPSS. The EcoPeller thrusters, with an input power of 2,600 kW each, offer high efficiency and maneuverability. The vessel will also be equipped with a TransverseThruster for enhanced dynamic positioning capabilities.
The propulsion system has been designed to minimize underwater noise emissions, meeting DNV ‘Silent A’ class noise requirements. The EcoPeller’s innovative design ensures optimal performance and course-keeping ability, making it a sustainable and versatile solution for modern vessels.
LeaCon Seal Monitoring System
To ensure environmental protection and operational reliability, SCHOTTEL will integrate the LeaCon seal monitoring system into the propulsion units. This system prevents seawater contamination from lubrication oil and monitors seal condition to detect wear early on, avoiding unscheduled maintenance.
Oceanic Research and Naval Support Capabilities
The MPSS will serve dual roles in oceanic research and naval support. It will feature laboratories for scientific research, accommodation for research staff, and facilities for deploying unmanned drones and helicopters. The vessel will also include a stern ramp for Unmanned Underwater Vehicles and Unmanned Surface Vehicles, as well as a flight deck and hangars for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles.
The “NRP Dom João II” is currently under construction at Damen Shipyards Group in Gala?i, Romania, and is expected to be delivered in 2026.
