Severn Estuary tidal range energy feasible, Commission says

The Future of Tidal Range Energy in the Severn Estuary

The Severn Estuary Commission has confirmed that tidal range energy in the Severn Estuary is a viable option for renewable power generation.

Despite its potential, the development of a large barrage has been ruled out at this stage due to stakeholder concerns, commercial barriers, and legislative challenges.

Marine Energy Wales suggests advancing a commercially viable tidal lagoon as a demonstration project to assess feasibility, drive economic growth, and support environmental monitoring.

With a tidal range of 14 meters, the Severn Estuary could potentially supply up to 7% of the UK’s total electricity demand, contributing significantly to the country’s net-zero target by 2050.

Key Recommendations for Progress

The Commission has outlined seven key recommendations to move forward:

  1. Formally recognize the role of tidal range energy in the UK’s future electricity mix.
  2. Support the development of a commercial demonstration project.
  3. Create a regional plan for estuary management and sustainable development.
  4. Establish a funding framework to attract private investment.
  5. Implement a public-sector-led approach through a project delivery vehicle.
  6. Invest in research and environmental monitoring.
  7. Implement strategic mitigation and compensation measures for environmental concerns.

The Western Gateway Partnership will play a key role in coordinating stakeholders and leading engagement efforts to ensure effective implementation of the recommendations.

Collaboration for Progress

Marine Energy Wales and the National Hydropower Association (NHA) signed a memorandum of understanding in November 2024 to strengthen cooperation within the global marine energy industry.

“By prioritising a commercially viable tidal lagoon, we can take a critical first step in unlocking tidal range energy – offering reliable, long-term renewable power while driving economic and environmental progress. Now is the time for coordinated action to turn this vision into reality,” said Jay Sheppard, Project Manager at Marine Energy Wales.
