Shell Contains Oil Leak at Pulau Bukom Facility in Singapore

Shell has successfully contained an oil leak from its oil processing units at the Shell Energy and Chemical Parks located at Pulau Bukom in Singapore. The company took swift action by shutting down facilities to investigate the source of the leak.

Efforts to locate the source of the leak in the oil processing unit are currently ongoing, as reported by Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority (MPA). In a proactive move, additional containment and absorbent booms have been deployed in the channel and at the mouth of the channel as precautionary measures.

Cleanup and Precautionary Measures

The clean-up of the light oil sheens off Pulau Bukom has been successfully completed. Absorbent booms have also been laid at Sisters’ Islands Marine Park and the beaches on Sentosa as a precautionary measure. Fortunately, there have been no sightings of oil sheens or oil patches in the waters off Sentosa, allowing the beaches to remain open for water activities.

The oil sheens were initially discovered by Shell on December 26 and promptly reported to the MPA and the National Environment Agency (NEA). Initial assessments deemed the scale of the oil sheens to be minor, with no risk to public safety or environmentally sensitive areas due to the containment measures implemented by Shell.

Investigation and Follow-Up

NEA is currently conducting an investigation into the incident in collaboration with MPA. Any wrongdoing or lapses discovered during the investigation will result in appropriate actions being taken. It is worth noting that the recent oil leak in Shell’s oil processing unit is unrelated to the slop pipeline leak that occurred on October 20, 2024, as clarified by MPA.
