Safetytech Accelerator’s MAMII Initiative Shows Promise in Cutting Methane Emissions in Maritime Industry

Recently, the Safetytech Accelerator, in partnership with industry giants like Chevron, Carnival Corporation, Shell, and Seapeak, announced the successful completion of three technology feasibility studies under its Methane Abatement in Maritime Innovation Initiative (MAMII). These studies have demonstrated the potential to significantly reduce fugitive methane emissions in the maritime sector.

The MAMII initiative is now looking to move forward with on-ship trials for the technologies that have shown promising results. Launched in September 2022, MAMII aims to address the growing concerns surrounding methane emissions in the maritime industry and promote the adoption of innovative solutions to mitigate these emissions.

With over 20 shipping and energy companies on board as anchor partners, MAMII has been at the forefront of driving technological advancements in methane detection and mitigation in the maritime sector.

Key Focus Areas of MAMII

While methane slip during the combustion process remains a significant source of emissions on ships, MAMII is also focusing on addressing emissions across the entire LNG supply chain, from loading to engine delivery.

Three companies – Xplorobot, Sorama, and Framergy – have been selected by MAMII to develop innovative solutions for detecting, measuring, and capturing fugitive methane emissions from LNG-fueled ships.

Technology Solutions

Xplorobot offers a handheld device and AI-powered platform that utilizes computer vision to detect and measure fugitive methane on ships. This technology allows for pinpointing leak locations, real-time emission rate data overlay, and seamless integration with existing systems for efficient issue resolution.

Sorama specializes in acoustic cameras that can visualize sound and vibration fields in 3D, enabling the detection of fugitive gas emissions with precision.

Framergy focuses on developing adsorbents and catalysts for methane emission management, offering innovative solutions to capture and mitigate methane emissions effectively.

Overall, the MAMII initiative is poised to drive significant progress in reducing methane emissions in the maritime industry and promoting sustainable practices within the sector.
