Norwegian Forestry Companies Partner with Skarv Shipping Solutions for Zero-Emission Timber Transport

Norwegian forestry companies Viken AT Market and AT Skog have entered into an agreement with Skarv Shipping Solutions, a joint venture between Grieg Edge and Peak Group, to transport timber on zero-emission ships powered by ammonia and electricity.

Under the agreement, Viken AT Market, known for shipping approximately 1 million tons of timber annually, will transition part of its timber transport to Skarv Shipping’s innovative vessel. The 7,800 dwt ammonia-ready general cargo self-unloader is set to begin operations in the summer of 2027.

Developed by Skarv Shipping in collaboration with Grieg Shipbrokers, the newbuild ship will be chartered to Arriva Shipping, responsible for managing the commercial ship operation for Viken AT Market. The vessel is designed for optimal efficiency at low speeds, ensuring cost-effective operations despite the higher cost of ammonia fuel compared to traditional options.

The ship will feature a 160-cubic ammonia tank, supplemented with marine gas oil (MGO) as pilot fuel, providing sufficient energy for a 14-day round trip from Norway to the continent. Chinese Huanghai Shipbuilding has been contracted to construct the vessel, with an anticipated delivery in the second quarter of 2027.

This ship will be an upgraded version of the sister ships ordered by Skarv Shipping for commercial use by Peak CSL Group, emphasizing its advanced capabilities in sustainable shipping practices.

“This is our first ship capable of sailing on ammonia from day one, allowing it to operate with minimal greenhouse gas emissions. Simultaneously, the engine is linked to an electric propulsion system that utilizes batteries and has access to shore power,” stated Jan Øivind Svardal, CEO of Skarv Shipping.

“Safety is a top priority in our design and operation. The vessel will be equipped with advanced safety systems, along with stringent operational procedures and crew training to mitigate risks associated with ammonia fuel usage.”

Established in 2022, Skarv Shipping Solutions aims to promote sustainable coastal shipping in Northern Europe. The joint venture currently has four multipurpose ships under construction in China for Peak CSL Group, with an expected delivery date in the fourth quarter of 2025.
