SKF to Deliver PTO System for Australian Wave Energy Developer

SKF Partners with Carnegie Clean Energy for Wave Energy Device

SKF has announced a partnership with wave energy technology developer Carnegie Clean Energy to provide power take-off (PTO) systems for its innovative CETO wave energy device.

The CETO technology is a fully submerged, point absorber type wave energy system that utilizes a submerged buoy to move with the ocean waves. This motion drives a PTO system, converting the wave energy into electricity.

As a step towards a long-term technical partnership for the commercialization of Carnegie’s CETO wave energy technology, SKF and Carnegie are working together on designing and delivering the PTO units.

Under a Development Agreement, SKF initially worked on the PTO bearing and shaft design activities. Following the successful completion of these design activities, SKF has been awarded the contract to manufacture three PTO units for the CETO deployment at the Biscay Marine Energy Platform.

Michael Baumann, Global Application Account Manager for Ocean Energy at SKF, expressed his excitement about the partnership, stating, “Carnegie is a global leader in wave energy technology development. Our collaboration started with individual components and has now evolved into a comprehensive power take-off system. We are proud to be part of this journey and look forward to commercializing the technology together.”

Carnegie’s CEO, Jonathan Fievez, highlighted the importance of the partnership with SKF in strengthening their supply chain and advancing CETO’s commercialization pathway. Fievez stated, “By leveraging SKF’s expertise and advanced technologies, we are ensuring that CETO remains a leading wave energy solution for the long term. We are thrilled to collaborate with SKF, a renowned manufacturer with the production capacity to support CETO’s scale-up.”

The partnership between SKF and Carnegie Clean Energy signifies a significant milestone in the advancement of wave energy technology. With SKF’s manufacturing capabilities and Carnegie’s innovative approach, the future looks promising for sustainable energy solutions in the marine sector.
