Beam Enhances Offshore Wind Services with AI-Driven ROV

High-tech offshore wind services provider Beam has made a significant investment in advancing its capabilities by acquiring the Quantum EV remotely operated vehicle (ROV) from SMD. The company has ambitious plans to integrate an artificial intelligence (AI)-driven system into the ROV to enhance its operational scope and efficiency in servicing offshore wind farms.

Beam will be incorporating its SubSLAM system, powered by Pathfinder software, into the Quantum EV ROV. This integration will enable AI-driven autonomous piloting capabilities, particularly in deeper and harsher underwater environments.

By combining the localization, AI, and mapping technology of SubSLAM with the high-current performance of the Quantum EV ROV, Beam aims to revolutionize offshore wind farm maintenance processes. The enhanced efficiency and effectiveness of the AI-driven system will play a crucial role in advancing the industry.

John McCann, ROV Sales & Business Development Manager at SMD, expressed excitement about the collaboration with Beam, emphasizing the potential of SubSLAM’s real-time 3D mapping, data collection, and image capture capabilities. When coupled with a robust vehicle like the Quantum EV, these capabilities can be utilized in even more challenging underwater conditions.

Simon Adams, Programme Director at Beam, highlighted the superior stability and position-keeping features of the Quantum EV during high-current operations. This, combined with the Pathfinder software and SubSLAM technology, will enable autonomous servicing of a broader range of offshore wind farms, even in harsh environments.

With this strategic investment and partnership, Beam is poised to lead the way in utilizing advanced technologies to optimize offshore wind services. The integration of AI-driven systems into ROVs represents a significant step towards achieving autonomous operations and enhancing overall efficiency in the renewable energy sector.
