South Korea to Build World’s Largest Liquefied Hydrogen Carrier

The South Korean government has announced ambitious plans to construct ‘the world’s largest’ liquefied hydrogen (LH2) carrier, aiming to establish a dominant position in this emerging market and secure the future of the Korean shipbuilding industry.

The groundbreaking demonstration vessel is scheduled to be completed by 2027, showcasing South Korea’s commitment to innovation and technological advancement.

With an investment of KRW 55.5 billion ($39.2 million) allocated for this year, the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy (MOTIE) is driving this initiative forward.

At a ceremony in Busan on May 9, 2025, MOTIE unveiled a public-private partnership group comprising industry experts, shipbuilders, universities, and research institutes dedicated to advancing LH2 carrier technology.

“Liquefied hydrogen carriers represent the future of maritime transportation, building on our expertise in liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels. By developing LH2 carriers, we aim to enhance the global competitiveness of the Korean shipbuilding industry and tap into new market opportunities,” stated MOTIE.

MOTIE elaborated on the unique capabilities of LH2 carriers, highlighting their ability to liquefy gaseous hydrogen at -253℃, significantly reducing its volume and increasing transport efficiency by over tenfold. This cutting-edge technology positions South Korea at the forefront of innovation in the maritime sector.

Notably, the construction of such large-scale LH2 carriers has not yet been commercialized by any country, underscoring South Korea’s pioneering role in this space.

This strategic endeavor aligns with South Korea’s broader vision to empower its shipbuilding industry in the LH2 carrier market, fostering growth and competitiveness on a global scale.

“Through the establishment of comprehensive regulations and infrastructure, we aim to set new standards in LH2 carrier technology, positioning South Korea as a leader in this emerging field,” concluded MOTIE.
