Introducing Stena Futuro: A Revolutionary New Generation Vessel

Stena Line has unveiled its groundbreaking concept for a new generation vessel – Stena Futuro. This 240-meter-long roro is specifically designed for the efficient transportation of semi-trailers and cars, setting a new standard in the maritime industry.

The innovative hull and superstructure of Stena Futuro have been meticulously optimized to maximize cargo space while prioritizing low weight and enhanced hydro- and aerodynamics for minimal fuel consumption.

Embracing sustainability, Stena Futuro will be equipped with cutting-edge technology to minimize its environmental impact. The vessel will feature hybrid propulsion, batteries, and fuel-efficient engines capable of running on multiple fuels. With a battery system enabling partial electric operation, the ship can reduce emissions during port maneuvers. Additionally, solar panels will contribute to its electricity requirements.

Not stopping there, Stena Futuro will incorporate an air lubrication system in its hull and a waste heat recovery system to repurpose exhaust gases for onboard heating and power generation.

One of the most striking features of Stena Futuro is its four retractable 40-meter-tall wing sails. Developed in collaboration with the Swedish research institute RISE, these sails have undergone rigorous testing to demonstrate their energy-saving potential, with projections suggesting up to 15% in fuel savings.

Nicolas Bathfield, Project Manager at Stena Teknik, emphasizes the vessel’s mission to achieve unparalleled efficiency and competitiveness in its cargo capacity by leveraging current technology. The ultimate goal is for Stena Futuro to set a new benchmark for fuel consumption in the industry.

While the production timeline for Stena Futuro is yet to be finalized, its design is expected to play a pivotal role in Stena Line’s future tonnage planning, shaping the company’s fleet strategy for years to come.
