Stolt-Nielsen Acquires Avenir LNG: A Strategic Move Towards Sustainable Energy Solutions

Stolt-Nielsen, a Norway-based company specializing in chemical and bulk liquid transportation and storage, has recently made a significant move in the LNG sector by entering into a share purchase agreement to acquire all the shares of UK-based midstream LNG & BioLNG company Avenir LNG. The transaction, set to be finalized in the first quarter of 2025 through Stolt-Nielsen Gas, marks a pivotal moment in the company’s pursuit of sustainable energy solutions.

Avenir LNG’s Focus on Marine Energy Transition

Since its establishment, Avenir LNG has been dedicated to supporting the marine energy transition through its fleet of LNG bunkering vessels. The company currently operates five vessels and has two newbuildings under construction, with deliveries scheduled for Q4 2026 and Q1 2027. These newbuildings, ordered from China’s Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering, signify Avenir LNG’s commitment to providing efficient and sustainable small-scale LNG supply solutions.

Strengthening Stolt-Nielsen’s Position in the LNG Sector

Previously jointly owned by Stolt-Nielsen Gas, Golar LNG, and Aequitas Limited, Avenir LNG now becomes a wholly-owned subsidiary of Stolt-Nielsen Gas. Following the completion of the acquisition, Stolt-Nielsen Gas will control approximately 94.37% of the outstanding shares and votes, solidifying the company’s position in the LNG sector.

Leadership Perspectives

Udo Lange, Chief Executive Officer of Stolt-Nielsen, expressed his satisfaction with the increased investment in Avenir LNG, emphasizing the strategic importance of the move in advancing sustainable energy solutions for maritime, industrial, and power generation markets. Jonathan Quinn, Managing Director of Avenir LNG, highlighted the company’s commitment to becoming a leading small-scale LNG shipping and trading company, crediting the founding shareholders for their support in positioning Avenir LNG at the forefront of the marine energy transition.
