Sudan Army Says RSF Attacks Key Port With Drones For First Time

Sudan’s Army Reports Drone Attacks in Port Sudan

May 4, 2025 (Bloomberg) – Sudan’s army reported that opponents utilized drones to target a military airbase and other locations in Port Sudan, marking the first known drone attacks on the Red Sea city since the onset of the two-year civil war.

According to the military’s statement on Sunday, some of the strikes carried out by what are commonly referred to as suicide drones resulted in “limited damage,” including hitting an ammunition depot at the base. Fortunately, there were no reported casualties, and the military indicated that anti-aircraft weapons successfully thwarted additional assaults.

Port Sudan serves as a key stronghold for Sudan’s army amidst the ongoing conflict with the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary group as they vie for control over the North African nation, a struggle that has tragically claimed the lives of up to 150,000 individuals.

As of yet, there has been no response from the RSF regarding the army’s assertions.

Much of Sudan’s army-led government relocated to the coastal city earlier in the conflict. The military recently regained control of the capital, Khartoum, from the RSF towards the end of March, dealing a significant blow to the group, although it maintains influence over a considerable portion of the expansive western region of Darfur.
