Svitzer Signs Global EcoTow Agreement with Wallenius Wilhelmsen
Svitzer, a leading provider of towage and marine services, has recently announced a significant milestone in its commitment to decarbonization by signing a global EcoTow agreement with the Wallenius Wilhelmsen group. This partnership marks a crucial step in Svitzer’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and supports Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s ambitious goal of decreasing Scope 3 emissions across Svitzer’s global operations.
The agreement encompasses tug jobs in key markets such as Australia, the UK, and Scandinavia. Through the implementation of the mass balance principle, Svitzer will utilize biofuels in its network and allocate the resulting CO₂ savings to Wallenius Wilhelmsen, enabling the company to mitigate emissions associated with towage services.
Ove Moring, Senior Manager of Supplier Contracting & Equipment at Wallenius Wilhelmsen, emphasized the significance of partnerships in driving decarbonization efforts. He stated, “This collaboration demonstrates the importance of partnerships in our decarbonization efforts. Working with a like-minded partner like Svitzer gives us a reliable path to reduce emissions beyond our direct operations.”
Furthermore, the EcoTow agreement reflects a growing trend in the industry towards voluntary emissions reduction schemes that exceed regulatory requirements. It showcases Svitzer’s innovative approach to supporting customers in advancing their climate strategies and highlights the company’s commitment to sustainability.
Gareth Prowse, Svitzer’s Head of Decarbonisation, expressed his optimism about the EcoTow initiative, stating, “We see EcoTow not only as a solution for today, but as a bridge to more transformative change.” This sentiment underscores Svitzer’s dedication to driving meaningful environmental impact through collaborative partnerships.
Overall, the global EcoTow agreement between Svitzer and Wallenius Wilhelmsen represents a significant milestone in the maritime industry’s collective efforts to combat climate change and reduce carbon emissions. By leveraging biofuels and innovative solutions, these two industry leaders are setting a precedent for sustainable practices and paving the way for a greener future.
