Chinese Shipbuilder Completes 8,600 CEU LNG Dual-Fuel Car Carrier Series
Chinese shipbuilder Shanghai Waigaoquiao Shipbuilding (SWS), a part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), recently achieved a significant milestone by completing the 8,600 CEU LNG dual-fuel car carrier series for compatriot financial services company CITIC Financial Leasing.
SWS announced this achievement on June 13, revealing that the third and final unit in the 8,600 CEU LNG-powered pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) series had been named and delivered.
The newly delivered ship, named Yong Le Kou, is the sister vessel to Wen Jing Kou, which was delivered in March 2025.
Ordered by CITIC and to be operated by COSCO Shipping, the three-unit series boasts impressive specifications, including a length of 199.9 meters, a breadth of 38 meters, and a designed speed of 19 knots. These vessels are classed by DNV and China Classification Society (CCS) and designed by Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute (SDARI) under CSSC.
SWS stated that the completion of this groundbreaking series expands their product portfolio and strengthens their brand influence, contributing to the acceleration of China’s shipbuilding excellence.
Recent data from Intermodal in March indicated that China is responsible for building 62% of new ships ordered globally, showcasing the country’s dominance in the shipbuilding industry.
In another significant development, China recently launched its largest ocean-going solar- and LNG-powered PCTC on its maiden voyage from Nansha, Guangzhou. This 7,000 CEU PV + LNG dual-fuel car carrier, fully loaded with Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs), is set to visit countries along the Belt and Road Initiative, including Greece, Turkey, Italy, and Tunisia.
Featuring a length of 199.9 meters and a gross tonnage of 68,252 tons, the vessel was commissioned by Guangzhou Yuanhai Auto Carrier, a subsidiary of COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers, and constructed by Guangzhou Shipbuilding International (GSI), also a part of CSSC.
