Taiwan Completes Maiden Sea Trial for First Indigenous Submarine
Taiwan accomplished a significant milestone on Tuesday as it completed the maiden sea trial for its first domestically developed submarine. This achievement marks a crucial step in a project aimed at bolstering deterrence against the Chinese navy and safeguarding vital sea lanes in the event of a conflict.
Amid China’s claims over Taiwan, the indigenous submarine program has been positioned as a pivotal component of Taiwan’s efforts to modernize its armed forces. As Beijing continues to conduct frequent military exercises to assert its sovereignty, Taiwan’s submarine program is a strategic response to enhance its defense capabilities.
Utilizing expertise and technology from various countries, including the United States and Britain, Taiwan’s submarine program signifies a breakthrough for the diplomatically isolated island nation. The government of Taiwan firmly rejects Beijing’s territorial claims, emphasizing the importance of enhancing its defense capabilities.
Leading the construction of eight planned submarines, Taiwan’s CSBC Corp announced that the first vessel, named the Narwhal, successfully completed its initial sea trial. The test validated crucial systems such as propulsion, ventilation, and radar, demonstrating the submarine’s functionality.
Following the sea trial, underwater tests will be conducted, gradually increasing the depth to further evaluate the submarine’s capabilities. Despite facing delays, Taiwan aims to deploy at least two domestically developed submarines by 2027, with potential plans to equip later models with missiles.
The first submarine, with a cost of T$49.36 billion ($1.67 billion), will feature a combat system by Lockheed Martin Corp and carry U.S.-made Mark 48 heavyweight torpedoes. As Taiwan’s armed forces seek to enhance their capabilities, the submarine program plays a crucial role in strengthening the country’s defense posture.
While Taiwan’s military capabilities are overshadowed by China’s formidable forces, the island nation is focusing on modernizing its military to engage in asymmetric warfare. By leveraging mobile and agile systems such as submarines, drones, and missile platforms, Taiwan aims to counter the military superiority of its larger neighbor.
As Taiwan continues its efforts to bolster its defense capabilities, the completion of the maiden sea trial for the indigenous submarine represents a significant advancement in the country’s quest for a robust and modernized military.
