Taiwan Unveils Unmanned Attack Boat Inspired by Ukraine’s Success
Following Ukraine’s achievements with unmanned drone boats in the Black Sea, Taiwan has introduced its own unmanned attack boat, the “Endeavor Manta,” with unique modifications.
The “Endeavor Manta” drone features a fiberglass-hull trimaran design, measuring 28 feet in length. Powered by two outboard motors, this military vessel is capable of displacing about five tonnes with weapons loadout and fuel, reaching speeds of over 35 knots. Its compact size and lightweight construction enable it to launch from small ports or unimproved beaches, enhancing deployment capabilities.
Unlike Ukraine’s smaller monohull drone boats with inboard propulsion, the Taiwanese design is equipped to carry lightweight torpedoes for multiple surface warfare attacks. Additionally, it retains the ability for ramming and detonation, ensuring versatility in combat scenarios.
Initially featuring a cockpit for a human crewmember, the final version of the Manta may undergo modifications. Manufacturer CSBC confirms its autonomous navigation capabilities, enabling the drone to return to port independently in case of command-and-control disruptions.
This development aligns with U.S. war planning strategies for a potential conflict in the Taiwan Strait. U.S. Indo-Pacific Command chief Adm. Sam Paparo advocates for the advancement of unmanned systems in the strait to create a formidable defense against Chinese invasion forces, allowing for a conventional response.
