Terntank Orders Two More Wind-Assisted Hybrid Tankers from Econowind
Swedish shipping company Terntank has announced its decision to equip two additional methanol-ready hybrid tankers with wind-assisted propulsion systems from Dutch specialist Econowind. This move comes following the strong performance results observed from the first installations, showcasing the efficiency and effectiveness of the technology.
The repeat order from Terntank includes the installation of EconoWind’s eight VentoFoil units on the two new methanol-ready hybrid tankers. This brings the total number of vessels equipped with Econowind’s technology to five, with each ship featuring four 16-meter wind wings.
The initial order for three newbuilds was placed in May 2023, and the latest contract signifies Terntank’s commitment to sustainable shipping practices. The company took delivery of its first Hybrid Solution Plus tanker with wind-assisted propulsion and a methanol-ready engine, Tern Vik, in April 2025.
Terntank’s CEO, Claes Möller, expressed the company’s dedication to reducing fuel consumption, stating, “At Terntank, we are always looking for ways to reduce fuel consumption. It’s part of our DNA.” He further mentioned the seamless integration of the VentoFoils with the Kongsberg system and the satisfaction with the actual fuel savings achieved.
Chiel de Leeuw, CCO of Econowind, highlighted the partnership with Terntank and their joint mission to decarbonize maritime transport. “We are proud to continue our collaboration with Terntank and support their leadership in sustainable shipping,” he said.
