RWE and Masdar Contract TGS and Fugro for Dogger Bank South Surveys

RWE and Masdar have signed contracts with TGS and Fugro to conduct detailed geophysical and geotechnical surveys for the eastern array of the proposed Dogger Bank South (DBS) offshore wind farms. These surveys will provide crucial insights into the seabed conditions of the sites located over 122 kilometers off the northeast coast of England.

Survey Details

TGS initiated surveys in April, focusing on acquiring ultra-high-resolution seismic data to evaluate the subsea terrain at the offshore wind turbine locations. Will Ashby, EVP of New Energy Solutions at TGS, emphasized the importance of this work in minimizing geohazards and ensuring safe project execution in a key offshore wind zone in the UK.

Fugro, a Dutch geo-data specialist, will conduct ground condition examinations beneath the seabed at the proposed turbine sites, inter-array cable routes, and platform foundations using cone penetration tests (CPTs) and sampling boreholes. The company will deploy multiple geotechnical vessels for this comprehensive survey, building on previous work completed for the DBS offshore wind farm.

DBS Offshore Wind Farms

The DBS project comprises two offshore wind farms, DBS East and DBS West, with a combined estimated capacity of 3 GW. Colin McAllister, Development Project Manager for DBS offshore wind farms, highlighted the critical role of detailed surveys in developing effective foundation designs for each location, emphasizing the projects’ potential to supply energy to millions of homes.

RWE leads both DBS projects, managing development, construction, and operations in collaboration with partners RWE and Masdar. The consent decision for the offshore wind farms is anticipated by the end of the year, paving the way for construction to potentially begin in 2026/2027 following a financial investment decision (FID).
