Norwegian Firm TGS Initiates Geophysical Survey for Green Volt Floating Wind Farm

Norwegian seismic firm TGS has commenced a geophysical survey for the innovative Green Volt floating offshore wind farm located off the coast of Scotland. The mobilization process began in Aberdeen last week, with activities scheduled throughout June to include an ultra-high resolution 3D (UHR3D) seismic survey aimed at providing detailed subsurface data for the floating wind farm’s site characterization.

The advanced survey utilizes integrated Multibeam Echo Sounder, Side Scan Sonar, Sub-bottom Profiler, and Magnetometer sensors to enhance geological understanding and offer critical insights for site planning and risk assessments. The UHR3D data obtained will provide a comprehensive understanding of subsurface conditions, identifying potential risks and challenges that may not be accurately captured through traditional 2D data interpolation.

By leveraging the latest acquisition configurations, TGS aims to improve efficiency and target resolutions to meet the highest industry standards, aiding in the identification of geological hazards and structural complexities for improved site assessment and risk mitigation strategies.

The Green Volt project, a joint venture between leading offshore wind developers Flotation Energy and Vårgrønn, is set to be Europe’s first commercial-scale floating wind farm at 560 MW. The project serves as a catalyst for developing a specialized U.K. floating wind supply chain.

Key Milestone for TGS

TGS sees this project as a key milestone in utilizing their expertise, technology, and resources to support the development of the Green Volt floating offshore wind farm. The simultaneous acquisition of all sensors and the application of cutting-edge processing techniques reaffirms their commitment to delivering industry-leading data solutions. UHR3D technology will play a crucial role in the development of floating wind farms, according to Will Ashby, TGS EVP New Energy Solutions.

Green Volt expresses their pleasure in working alongside TGS for these important geophysical site surveys, highlighting the advancement of their project and the development of the U.K.’s floating wind supply chain. Accurate data is deemed a vital component in their learning process and will contribute to strengthening the UK’s offshore wind sector. The contract also supports local jobs and innovation, aiding in the establishment of a world-leading offshore wind industry in the UK, as stated by Matt Green, Project Director for Green Volt.

Overall, TGS’s geophysical survey for the Green Volt floating wind farm marks a significant step forward in the development of sustainable offshore wind energy in the UK, showcasing the collaborative efforts of industry leaders towards a greener future.
