The Quantum Economy: Seizing Unprecedented Opportunities in Marine Technology

This week at Marine Technology News, the world of marine technology is abuzz with the unfolding opportunities presented by the quantum economy. The World Economic Forum recently introduced its groundbreaking report titled “Embracing the Quantum Economy – A Pathway for Business Leaders,” in collaboration with Accenture, shedding light on the immense potential of quantum technologies.

Advancements in Quantum Sensing

The report delves into the advancements in quantum computing, quantum sensing, and quantum communication, highlighting the strategic steps for businesses to capitalize on these cutting-edge technologies. Quantum sensors, in particular, offer a significant leap in sensitivity compared to traditional sensors, with potential disruptive applications in land and sea monitoring activities.

Marine Technology News reported on a recent agreement between ADNOC, the Technology Innovation Institute, and ASPIRE to develop quantum sensing technology for carbon storage monitoring. This technology promises to detect subtle environmental changes, enhancing safety and preventing leaks in marine environments.

Promising Advances in Quantum Magnetometers and Gravimeters

Georgios Salavasidis, a senior robotics researcher at NOC in the UK, highlighted the promising advances in quantum magnetometers and gravimeters. Quantum magnetometers have already been successfully utilized in various detection and monitoring applications, with potential applications in underwater vehicles for high-resolution subsurface mapping, leak detection, and locating buried infrastructure beneath the seabed.

While quantum gravimeters are still in development, Salavasidis emphasized their potential for revolutionizing key marine applications. Quantum sensing technologies offer a ray of hope for GPS-denied navigation, addressing a fundamental challenge faced by underwater vehicles that operate without access to GPS.

Commercial Potential of Quantum Sensing

The unveiling of the world’s first quantum optical microscope in Canada this week marks a significant milestone in quantum sensing technology. Developed by a collaborative team of researchers, the microscope utilizes entangled photons to provide ultra-low intensity illumination, delivering high-resolution images with reduced risk of photo damage.

These new developments underscore the vast commercial potential of quantum sensing as it transitions from experimentation to widespread deployment. With the quantum sensors market projected to reach $2.2 billion by 2045, according to IDTechEx’s latest report, the future of marine technology is poised for a quantum leap.

Stay tuned as we witness the evolution of the quantum economy in the marine technology sector, unlocking unprecedented opportunities for innovation and growth.
