Three Australians Arrested for Importing Ornate Tiles Coated in Meth

Australian Authorities Arrest Three Men for Attempting to Smuggle Meth in Ceramic Tiles

Australian authorities have recently made a significant drug bust, arresting three men for trying to import over 300 kilos of crystal meth concealed within ceramic tiles. This innovative smuggling tactic highlights the ongoing battle against drug trafficking and the lengths to which criminals will go to evade detection.

Drug smugglers have employed various creative methods to transport illegal substances across borders, including dissolving methamphetamine and coating objects with the solution. This specific technique involves soaking items in meth, allowing it to dry, and making it nearly undetectable during customs inspections. While this approach is not widely reported, it has surfaced in Australia before, demonstrating the adaptability of criminal organizations.

In a recent case, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) became involved after the Australian Border Force intercepted a shipment of ornate mosaic tiles originating from a Middle Eastern manufacturer. Upon inspection, authorities discovered that 360 boxes of these tiles were impregnated with methamphetamine, totaling approximately 360 kilos with an estimated street value of US$215 million.

Following the interception, the AFP tracked the shipment to a storage facility outside Sydney, where a male suspect retrieved it. With the assistance of another individual, the drugs were then set to be transported to a storage facility in Melbourne for the intended recipient, a resident of the city.

Subsequent investigations led to a search of the third suspect’s residence in May, during which electronic devices containing incriminating evidence were seized. This information ultimately led to the arrest of the two other suspects on July 3, thwarting their drug smuggling operation.

AFP acting commander Peter Fogarty emphasized the agency’s commitment to combatting organized crime and preventing the importation of illicit drugs into Australia. Despite the elaborate and unconventional methods employed by criminal syndicates, law enforcement agencies remain vigilant in their efforts to disrupt these activities and safeguard communities.
