Timo Vesala: Paving the Way to a Greener Global Waterfront

Timo Vesala, Account Manager, Americas, at ABB Marine & Ports, is at the forefront of driving the marine industry towards a more sustainable future. With a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and a passion for clean technology and maritime decarbonization, Timo has been instrumental in spearheading innovative projects that promote electrification and propulsion systems in the Americas market.

One such project that highlights ABB’s commitment to sustainability is the collaboration with All American Marine on a new hybrid-electric ocean sampling vessel for the Orange County Sanitation District in California. This 19.8-meter vessel, designed by Teknicraft, aims to support the district’s ocean monitoring program while meeting California Air Resources Board’s stringent emission requirements.

Unlike traditional propulsion systems that rely on fossil fuels, ABB’s hybrid-electric propulsion system allows the vessel to operate on electricity for certain tasks, significantly reducing emissions and paving the way for a greener maritime industry. By leveraging renewable energy sources and future-proofing the vessel for new technologies, ABB and All American Marine are setting a new standard for environmentally friendly maritime solutions.

The Future of Hybrid Electric Propulsion

As the maritime industry shifts towards cleaner and more efficient propulsion systems, ABB’s hybrid-electric solutions are gaining traction across different vessel types and sizes. From smaller catamarans to larger ferries and cruise ships, ABB’s modular and flexible approach to hybrid-electric systems caters to a wide range of operational needs.

With a focus on reducing fuel consumption, emissions, and overall operational costs, ABB’s hybrid-electric solutions offer significant benefits for workboat operators. By optimizing engine efficiency, integrating energy storage systems, and leveraging advanced technologies, ABB is driving the industry towards a more sustainable future.

Retrofitting for a Sustainable Future

As the industry looks towards a more sustainable future, retrofitting existing vessels with hybrid-electric solutions is becoming increasingly viable. ABB’s expertise in system integration and modular design allows for seamless retrofitting of older vessels, improving fuel efficiency, reducing emissions, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.

With a strong focus on collaboration, innovation, and sustainability, ABB is leading the charge towards a greener global waterfront. By pushing the boundaries of technology and embracing cleaner propulsion solutions, ABB is setting a new standard for sustainable maritime operations.
