Torqeedo Powers Autonomous Research Vessel for Environmentally Friendly Inland Shipping
Torqeedo has partnered with the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) and the Development Center for Ship Technology and Transport Systems (DST) to provide an electric propulsion system for a groundbreaking new research vessel, “NOVA”. This autonomous vessel will operate on the Rhine, focusing on exploring ways to make inland shipping more environmentally friendly and efficient.
The Innovative Design of “NOVA”
The 15-meter-long “NOVA” features a unique twin-hull design, making it suitable for both cargo transportation and passenger services. The vessel’s development and construction spanned approximately two years, with Torqeedo’s electric propulsion system at its core. Powered by two 50kW Deep Blue motors and four Deep Blue Batteries 80, the vessel is equipped with a comprehensive power management system. This system includes a dedicated low voltage circuit for onboard systems and a high voltage system for propulsion, ensuring efficient and reliable operation.
Pioneering Research Trips
“NOVA” will embark on research trips in the Port of Duisburg on the Rhine and in canals throughout the Ruhr region. The vessel will serve as a platform for studying autonomous navigation systems and their integration into inland vessels. Researchers at UDE and DST anticipate that fully automated, partially autonomous vessels could become a reality within the next eight to ten years, revolutionizing the inland shipping industry.
With Torqeedo’s advanced electric propulsion system powering “NOVA”, the research team can focus on developing and refining autonomous navigation software and conducting scientific analyses. The vessel represents a significant step towards a more sustainable and efficient future for inland shipping.
