Stena Drilling Secures Contract with TotalEnergies for Offshore Exploration in Suriname

French energy firm TotalEnergies has recently announced a partnership with offshore drilling contractor Stena Drilling for an exploration project in Suriname. The contract entails the utilization of Stena Drilling’s state-of-the-art drillship, Stena DrillMAX, for managed pressure drilling operations in the region.

Commencing in the second quarter of this year, the program will focus on drilling one exploration well for TotalEnergies EP Suriname B.V. Additionally, the contract includes the provision for extending the collaboration for up to three additional wells in Suriname, showcasing the potential for further exploration and development in the area.

State-of-the-Art Drillship for Offshore Operations

The Stena DrillMAX, constructed in 2008, is a cutting-edge DP Class 3 drillship designed for harsh environment operations. Capable of drilling in water depths of up to 10,000 feet and reaching a maximum drilling depth of 35,000 feet, the vessel offers advanced capabilities for offshore exploration activities. With accommodation for up to 180 personnel, the Stena DrillMAX is equipped to support efficient drilling operations in challenging environments.

In recognition of its commitment to environmental sustainability and operational excellence, Stena DrillMAX was awarded DNV’s Abate (P) notation in December 2023. This accolade highlights the drillship’s adherence to stringent energy management practices and underscores Stena Drilling’s dedication to implementing eco-friendly initiatives across its fleet.

Continued Success in Offshore Exploration

Prior to its engagement in Suriname, Stena DrillMAX participated in an exploration drilling campaign with ExxonMobil in Newfoundland and Labrador. Following this project, the drillship is scheduled to return to Guyana to collaborate on ExxonMobil’s expansive 35-well exploration and appraisal drilling campaign in the Stabroek block, further solidifying its position as a key player in offshore exploration activities.
